Preserving Apples

If your apple trees produce more fruit than you can eat, you may wondering what you can do with all those extra apples! While apples are only in season in the fall, if you learn different ways of preserving them, you can enjoy them any season. It does not take much time to do and can also be a lot of fun.

You’ll first want to think about which types of apples to use. Ideally apples should be as fresh as possible. If possible, it is a good idea to use two or three different varieties of apples. Plan to use at least 4-5 bushels of apples each time you can. It is also important to wash the apples thouroughly before you get started.  Once they are washed the next step is to peel them. An easy way to do this is to use an apple slicer which helps remove the skins and the cores.

Once all of the apples are ready, your next step will depend on what you plan on making. You can make applesauce, apple pie filling, or can them whole if you wish. You could also make apple jelly or jam as well. There are a number of websites with detailed information on making all of your favorites such as this one on canning apple pie filling. All you need to do is simply follow the recipe as directed. Once you have the jars filled you will be ready to process them in your canner. For most people, this is between 10-15 minutes.

There are a number of rewards when it comes to preserving your own foods. You will be able to know exactly what is in your food without worrying about harsh chemicals or preservatives. It is also quite cost effective as well. Best of all, it can also be a lot of fun!
