There are many studies that make you think about how you live your life, and this study and others like it remind us that we need to more diligent when it comes to safety of ourselves, our family, and especially our children.

So, here are some statistics that may seem to many to just be numbers, but to many of the people who were counted in this study, will be marked by scars that will be life long reminders that barbecuing is a cooking method that required diligence and care to maintain a safe cooking environment.

Grill safety refers to all types of grilling: Propane grill safety, charcoal grill saftey, smoker grill safety, electric grill safety, or a hypbrid combo grill. Whether you are having a party, or dinner with the family,  bbq grill safety should not be overlooked.

The Consumer Safety Counsel’s study over a 5 year period surveyed, a total of 145 accidents out of 231 result showed burn/scald injuries, more than all the other classifications combined.

The Types of Barbecue Accidents:

  • Burns
  • Scalding
  • Abrasions, Cuts
  • Punctures
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Open Soft Tissue Injuries

The types of barbecue accidents that occurred to the two most vulnerable age groups (children
aged 7 and under and adults aged between 20 and 35.

In the adult age group 63.5% of injuries comprised burn/scald. Of these, 30% were reported to be caused by the
inappropriate use of flammable liquids such as lighting fluid, and even gasoline to accelerate the burning of the charcoal.

The most common injury to children was also of the burn/scald type (69%).
Children accounted for 9% of the injuries that were noted at soft tissue injuries without an open wound most likely involved or indicated a collision with the barbecue.

Now you move on to the  percentages of each of the age groups that suffered open soft tissue injuries and the numbers jump up to 14% for children and 23.5% for adults. These injuries were sustained on sharp edges and protrusions on different types of barbecues, barbecue parts, and barbecue utensils. This raises concerns about the quality ofconstruction of  many barbecue cooking units.

Not surprising the most commonly injured body part identified from analysis of all the cases, is the fingers/hand/ arm with more than half (54.5%) of injuries affecting this region. This is true also for the adult age group who suffered injuries from the inappropriate use of flammable liquids. However, in several cases burns were sustained to the face.

Most Places Where Barbecue Accidents Occured:

In turning to the location of the accident, 72% happen in the garden, home or patio. A few cases were classified as occurring at public venues or events.
