Secrets To Grilling Like A Pro

Learning how to master the grill, and the food you put on it can be frightening to many casual grillers. If you are a beginning griller, than we are here to help you out, and give you a few pointer to make your grilling experience more enjoyable, and appetizing. However, right Up front one of the basic rules for grilling is that for the most part there are not “set rules”. Every griller out there has their own grilling techniques and depending on the grill you’re using these techniques may differ.  Perhaps it is this no holds bar attitude that makes grilling so popular, and when it comes to making up our own rules there is no greater power in that  (especially for men).

Grilling was the first real cooking method of our ancestors, and the taste and texture that grilling gives food continues to captivate us, and draw us back to this ancient cooking method. The special flavors that grilling imparts on food continues to make grilling a favorite past time, and cooking method of many people around the world. Heading into today’s barbecue grilling methods there are a few “set grilling rules” that need to be followed to get the best flavor, and truth be told grilling is an art, and with any artistic endeavor practice makes perfect, and when grilling there is no exception there. The desire to try, and benefit from the trial and errors are what make great grillers, and to be great you have to throw yourself into the fire (not literally) and be willing to experiment with different foods, seasonings, marinades, cooking temperatures, and cooking time.

Charcoal Grill, Gas Grill, Electric Grill
 Combo Gas/Charcoal?

Charcoal grills are not at the top of the list as more than 60 percent of people choose gas grills, and polls show this is mostly a matter of ease of use. Here are a few pros and cons of other grill styles:

Charcoal Grills

Pros

  • Less Expensive than gas grills
  • Uses charcoal and an open flame for more traditional grilling techniques
  • Produces a delicious smoke flavoring
  • Easy portability for taking anywhere depending on size

Cons

  • More challenging to control heat
  • The apparent risks of an open flame
  • Ashes need to be dumped, and disposed of
  • Flare ups and charcoal can produce a large amount of smoke
  • More difficult to clean and maintain

Grilling Tip

  • Many people fall victim to using lighter fluid with their charcoal which is a “STOP DON’T DO THAT TIP”.  Instead use a chimney starter. They can be found inexpensively or make.

Gas Grills

  • Turn it on and it’s ready to go
  • Driven by a propane gas tank
  • Instant flame, heat control knobs, and often multiple burners
  • Heats up in mere minutes at the push of a button, heat control knobs
  • Fast, even cooking

Grilling Tips

  • BTUs are listed and this stands for British thermal unit. It is used to the amount of heat energy is needed to elevate the temperature of one pound of water by one degree F. The BTU’s are not an indicator of how rapidly the grill will heat up, but it is helpful to determine how much fuel propane will be need when cooking on the grill. So, let’s look at a  propane grill, with a rating of  15,000 BTUs per pound it will 15,000 BTUs in one hour, or about one pound of propane in an hour.  Unless you have a really big grill, don’t get carried away with thinking that a grilling offering 100,000 BTU is going to make your grilling experience any better.

What To Look For In A Grill

 ______________________________

It can be overwhelming when you go out shopping for anything, and charcoal grills are no exception. Buying a grill is a lot like buying a car, it really come down to what features you want, and what you’re willing to pay for them.

Cost of Grills

Price is all over the place, but the average grill lasts for about 4- 5 years on the low end, and head up to the 7-8 year mark for better grills. How much you want to spend will depend on the features that you need, and how often you plan on really using it. If you are a casual griller 1-2 times a week a grill in the $500- $600 would run you a couple dollars a use. Choose a less expensive model and your per use cost will be less, but if you choose to cheap a model you may end up chucking it, and having to replace it with a better model.

Grilling Grates

When buying grates you want to be on the lookout for quality stainless steel, or the very easy to clean porcelain-coated metal grates. Many people find that the heavier grilling grates sear the meat better, and in doing so it helps to holds in more juice and flavor.

Size Does Matter

Yes, when it comes to grilling size does matter. If you live in a condo, apartment, or are sharing living quarters you may have to opt for a smaller grill to meet your living requirements. Smoking up your neighbor’s apartment next door may not make you too popular, so consider your grill options. Larger grills are available in every size from build your own grill using a 55 gallon drum, custom built in grills to small travel grills to take camping, or out to the local park.

Is there a perfect grill size?

The experts seem to agree that 400 sq inch is the perfect grill size unless you’re cooking for a really big crowd or family. Then head up to a bigger size; larger grills can be more expensive, but the larger capacity of the grill surface can make outdoor entertaining very appealing, any smaller than the 400 square inche grill, and grilling can become a chore, and problematic. When the grill size is too small food does not cook properly and you spend more time grilling, and rotating batches of foods. Getting at least a 400 sq inch grill will guarantee that you have room for steaks, and a side dish to cook together saving you time, frustration, and provide you with the ability to sit down and eat with the family or your guests.
